The province of Chiriquí is located on the southwest extreme of the Republic of Panama and it has a surface area of 8,653 square kilometers. On the north, it borders with the Province of Bocas del Toro and on the south it borders with the Pacific Ocean, to the east with the Province of Veraguas, and to the west with Costa Rica. The natural landscape of the Province of Chiriquí displays extreme contrasts, encompassing from coastal plains to steep mountains with altitudes that exceed 3,000 meters. These highlands are of volcanic origin and they occupy most of the territory.
Only 45 minutes from the warm city of David you will find Boquete, a place known as the city of eternal spring, flowers and coffee. Boquete was founded on 1911. Its first inhabitants were immigrants from Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Sweden and Germany who discovered a cozy cold weather on its slopes. For this reason, it properties, farms and houses are a showcase of reminiscences from styles of architecture that are traced back to these European countries.
The cultivation of flowers, coffee, fruits and a variety of garden products, stand out as one of the principal sources of work for the people of Boquete. As a producer of coffee, Boquete holds the first place in quality of the grain in the Republic of Panama.
Its steep mountains are inhabited by a group of Indians called Gnobe Buglé or Guaymíes, who work in the coffee plantations and the farms and who are know for their pretty, colorful, showy “Chaquira” handicrafts, the basketry, the typical “Chacaras” and their native women dresses called “Nahua”.
From Boquete you will be able to arrange several first class tours.
To start, climbing to the top of the Barú Volcano is a very exciting adventure. On the way up you will observe the fascinating cloudy tropical forest, fauna and the panoramic view of the sea. This is the highest point of the Republic of Panama.
Bird watching is also one of the main attractions that Boquete has to offer. The almost extinct Resplandescent Quetzal, the BellBird, the Volcano Junco and many more birds that make this ecological reserve their habitat, may be seen here.
Tourists may also visit a coffee “beneficio” (plantation) in the harvest season and see the Guaymi Indians harvesting the crop which is then sent to the processing plant. Visitors may then experience and enjoy a taste of our excellent brew.
In the nearby town of Caldera, located to the southeast of Boquete, you will get a chance to visit its thermal pools. These pools are famous for the curative properties of their thermal waters.
You will also find two large rivers for rafting: the Chiriquí River and the Chiriquí Viejo River. Both rivers are born at the Barú Volcano and in their journeys, which take approximately four to five hours, you will find rapids, cascades and strong currents. From May to December the Chiriquí River is at its best for rafting and for the rest of the year the Chiriquí Viejo River would be the best choice.
Boquete is the ideal place for the visitor to engage in activities centered around nature, since you can stroll around the river banks, visit the gardens, the flower and exotic fruit plantations, ride horses, and also observe exotic birds.
Our recommended adventure starts at the Panamonte Inn & Spa, nestled in the lovely Valley of Boquete, where pleasant service and a friendly reception await you.
